What makes a deduction game work online
Three things matter more online than at a table: the game must enforce the rules (nobody can peek or forget to show a card), turns must be short enough that nobody drifts off, and it must work on the device people actually have, usually a phone.
NoHonor
A heist version of the three-hidden-cards formula: six crew, six methods, nine locations, and one accusation. You tap a location to move, interrogate the other players, and work out who took the loot, how they cracked the safe and where it's stashed.
- Pros: free; plays on phones too; private rooms with a code; bots on three levels; Learn by playing teaches the rules in ten minutes.
- Cons: needs a free account; no typed chat yet; one scenario at launch; two-player mode not out yet.
Board Game Arena
A large platform of licensed board games playable in the browser, with real-time and turn-based tables. Several deduction and hidden-information games are available.
- Pros: huge catalogue; strong community; asynchronous play.
- Cons: some games and features need a paid membership; the interface is dense on a phone.
Codenames (official online version)
Two teams, one grid of words, and a spymaster giving one-word clues. It is deduction through language rather than elimination.
- Pros: free; quick to explain; great on a video call.
- Cons: needs at least four people; it's a word game, not a mystery.
Secret Hitler (fan-made online version)
A hidden-role game where a few players secretly work against the rest. The deduction is about people, not cards.
- Pros: brilliant with a big group; free.
- Cons: needs five or more; fan-run, so availability can change; the theme is not for every group.
Online murder-mystery kits
Scripted cases where each guest plays a character and the group uncovers the culprit together.
- Pros: theatrical; great for a party.
- Cons: one-off stories you can only play once; usually paid.
